Vaginal pH And Why It Matters | BoriCap

why does vaginal pH matter?

Vaginal yeast infections & bacterial vaginosis are the result of a departure from normal vaginal pH levels

Most harmful bacteria have a difficult time surviving in an acidic environment. Having a vaginal pH in the 3.8 - 4.5 range discourages growth of harmful bacteria and encourages survival of good bacteria. An acidic vaginal environment allows the good bacteria to thrive.

What is considered normal vaginal pH?

When you see the tiny grey range where vaginal pH should be maintained, you can understand why it is difficult to restore vaginal pH to normal levels. Examples of the pH in other parts of your body are:

  • pH of blood 7.35 - 7.45

  • pH of mouth 6.8 - 7.5

  • pH of stomach 1.5 - 2.0

  • pH of the vagina 3.8 - 4.5

  • pH of semen 7.2 - 8

When the pH of an area gets out of whack, the fallout is clear. Vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are perfect examples of what can go wrong when normal vaginal pH is not maintained."

What happens when vaginal pH goes up or down?

With such range throughout the body, it’s amazing to think how complicated this must be to keep all systems go! However when the pH of an area gets out of whack, the fallout is clear. Vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are perfect examples of what can go wrong when the ideal pH is not maintained. Most harmful bacteria have a difficult time surviving in an acidic environment. Having a vaginal pH in the 3.8 - 4.5 range discourages growth of harmful bacteria and encourages survival of good bacteria. An acidic vaginal environment allows the good bacteria to thrive. This bacteria produces lactic acid which keeps the vaginal pH within the normal range. Pretty amazing system right? However when pH climbs to above 4.5, the good bacteria begin to die off and bacterial vaginosis can occur. In the vagina, yeast begins to flourish when the pH is above 4.5 creating the telltale signs and symptoms of a yeast infection.

What factors can cause your vaginal pH to fall out of the normal range??

  • YOUR PERIOD! Blood has a pH of 7.35 - 7.45, so it’s easy to see how your period can bring on a yeast or BV infection. YES you can use BoriCap when you have your period!

  • ANTIBIOTICS! While antibiotics are crucial in killing off bad bacteria, they also kill off the good bacteria which is responsible for producing lactic acid which keeps the vaginal pH in the normal range. Be sure to be taking FloraPro oral probiotic while you're taking antibiotics.

  • INTERCOURSE! Seminal pH is alkaline in nature, 7.2 - 8 which can disturb the acidity of the vagina and bring on an infection. Use BoriCap after intercourse!

  • HORMONES! When estrogen levels fall due to breastfeeding or menopause, the bacteria, lactobacilli, that are responsible for acid production in the vagina start to die off. If you are post menopausal and have vaginal dryness, it is imperative to insert BoriCap with a generous amount of water based lubrication to aid in the capsule dissolving. Also it is important to have a discussion with your medical provider to address vaginal dryness.

How can I maintain normal vaginal pH?

With so many factors influencing the vaginal pH, it’s a wonder that vaginal pH is ever normal. However, understanding the mechanism behind how infections develop is the first step in developing an action plan against them. When you listen to your body and pay attention to your infection triggers, it’s easier to know how to develop a management plan.

  • START YOUR DAY WITH FLORAPRO! FloraPro is an oral feminine probiotic which has been custom formulated to support vaginal health. It contains a high-potency 42 Billion CFU's. CFU's stands for colony forming units which is the measurement of how many good bacteria a product contains. FloraPro contains 9 live strains ( or different types) of bacteria which have been specifically selected to promote vaginal flora and yeast balance.

  • KEEP BORICAP ON HAND! When flare ups occur, having BoriCap as an immediate go-to product can significantly reduce the length of your infection. Start usage as instructed when the first symptoms occur to avoid a full blown infection.

  • AVOID UNNECESSARY ANTIBIOTIC USE! Sometimes antibiotics are unavoidable but overuse encourages antibiotic resistance and depletes good vaginal bacteria. This healthy vaginal bacteria keeps your vaginal pH in check so use antibiotics only when it is deemed necessary by your healthcare provider. When you need to take antibiotics, be sure to take FloraPro at the same time!
